You're Hired! Now What?

Congratulations!  Your hard work paid off and you’ve been offered a job.  Here are some recommendations for a smooth transition to your new job:

Listen first

You were hired because you have something to contribute. In order to make sure your ideas and recommendations are well received, listen first and give yourself an opportunity to gain an understanding of the current situation before making suggestions for change.

Be available

It’s easy to get caught up in your new job and making a good impression with productivity. Remember the importance of relationships, and make yourself available to introductions, lunch invitations, that extra moment to get to know your co-workers. Ultimately having these strong work relationships will enhance your ability to be productive.

Be flexible

Your ability to adjust to required changes is going to have a strong impact on your career. Demonstrate this ability by being willing to learn the ways of your new employer.

Ask questions

Making assumptions is an easy way to get started on the wrong foot at your new office. Not sure if when you should go to lunch? Whether or not you can check social profiles? Your coworkers’ preferences for communication? Ask!  Just the act of asking the questions will convey your consideration for the rest of your team.

Proceed with caution

Even after asking questions, you may not be clear on all expectations. Dress codes are easy to misinterpret. Business casual means different things at different organizations. If you’re not completely certain that something is appropriate, wait to see how other (highly regarded) employees behave and follow their examples.
