How to: Create a Free Email Account

Most employers use email to communicate with candidates. Many will request resumes via email, schedule interviews and send updates about job openings. Prospective employers are often exchanging information with a large number of candidates for any given position and email provides a record of their conversations. Email communication also eliminates the inconvenience of leaving phone messages back and forth. If you are looking for work and don’t have an email account, we recommend that you follow these easy steps to create one:

1.   Choose a host for your email account. As you’re deciding on a host, make sure you’re considering the device you will normally use to access your email. If you’re using a smartphone or tablet, you’ll want to make sure you are comfortable with the way your email appears on that device.

Here are three commonly used email providers:
  • Google (Gmail)
  • Yahoo
  • HotMail and Live.com

2.   Decide on an email address. When selecting a name for your email account, be sure to stick to professional names. The simpler the email address, the better.

  • If it’s available, firstnamelastname@sample.com is ideal.
  • If that is not an option, adding special characters or changing the order of the names can help: firstname.lastname; firstname_lastname; lastnamefirstname; lastname.firstname.

You may have to get creative if you have a common name, but stick to these guidelines:
  • Your name should be included in the email address
  • Avoid using years in your email address. Many people use their birth years, graduation years or even the current year when they set up their account. This is not recommended for job seekers.
  • Avoid using nicknames, hobbies, childrens’ names or other words that may disclose personal or confidential information.

That’s all there is to it! You can use your email address to register for online accounts and exchange information with prospective employers. Remember to check frequently for new messages, and respond promptly.
