Make Sure You Know What to Look for In a Firm.

When employers want to turn over their staffing needs to an expert, they start by locating a qualified, dependable firm to handle their human resources needs — but finding a firm is harder than just picking up the phone.

1. A situational analysis is a must. The firms you're reviewing should require information about your hiring needs, the services you'll need them to provide and your business goals, as well as key challenges, performance measures, etc. To ensure they are recommending the best candidate(s) for the position(s), they also should ask in-depth questions about the position, the responsibilities, the management structure, the culture of the company and even the "soft skills" you're looking for. Based on this information, the staffing firm should provide their analysis of the situation and a tactical hiring plan to help you reach your goals.

2. Review the firms' credentials and capabilities. Develop a "Request for Proposal" (RFP). Ask each candidate firm to respond regarding their capabilities, and to highlight relevant experience in the industry or with the position(s) you're looking to hire.

3. Meet in-person and ask for references. A good staffing firm should get to know your business and the position(s) you're looking to fill by completing a site visit. When you meet, an important thing to look for is a firm that has done their homework and gives you specific ideas versus those that are just talking about themselves. Check references just like you would a potential employee and ask questions about the firm's work, the process that the reference went through and any challenges the reference experienced.

4. Be comfortable with the firm's processes. Ask questions about the screening, interviewing and recommendation process the firm goes through to ensure you get the best candidate(s) possible. What are the firm’s personal interviews like? Do they conduct aptitude testing of some sort? If the placement is for a temporary assignment, do they have employee evaluations from previous assignments? How do they prep the candidate for working at your company?

The key is to make sure the staffing firm meets the same standards and goals as the employer. Just as in every other aspect of business, extra effort goes a long way, so don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions — your bottom line will thank you!
