    Alabama's jobless rate up to 9.6% - BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Alabama's unemployment rate surged to 9.6 percent in May from 9.3 percent a month earlier, and state officials say the April 27 tornadoes that destroyed thousands of homes and businesses across the state are partly to blame.
