Benefits of Temporary Work

The ranks of temporary workers have exploded. The temporary staffing industry has remained strong in the U. S. economy, expanding opportunities for many workers. However, “temping” is often seen as an inferior choice when compared to full-time employment. In fact, temporary work offers many benefits that would make it a very attractive choice, especially for veterans who are transitioning to the civilian workforce. These benefits include:

• Flexibility – The very nature of temporary work allows you to attend to personal obligations, take specific time to attend as needed, and basically fit your career around your life. No matter what the reason, having a flexible schedule allows you to take care of all of the things that are important while earning a paycheck.
• Apply your military experience – Different companies use different systems and methodologies to get the same work done. Additionally, civilian employers work very differently than military employers (in terms of both processes and lingo), so the transition can be difficult. Every job – even if represented by the same job title – uses different computer programs, databases and different procedures and processes. As a transitioning veteran, you will be able to spend time in different environments to learn how to apply your military skills to the civilian workplace. This will (in turn) make you more marketable to employers when a full-time position becomes available.
• Fill gaps in resume – If you find yourself unemployed, consider working in a temporary capacity while you are looking for a full-time position. Temporary work is a proven way to “get your foot in the door” of a desired company or in a competitive hiring position. The average job posting receives more than 50 resumes, so working as a temporary in a highly regarded company or in a competitive industry could be a differentiator between you and other candidates.
• Networking – Many people struggle with networking; it may not be within their “comfort zone”. For a veteran, this is exacerbated, since your entire network has been housed within the U.S. military. However, networking is an effective tool that job seekers need to use in their job search. In order to network effectively, though, you must step out of your comfort zone, away from the Internet and go meet people. You are more likely to receive assistance from someone who has a relationship with you and has seen you work. Social media sites are a good resource, but they should be supplemented through face-to-face time with others. Temporary positions are a good way to meet new people and grow your job search network.
