Position Title: Legal Administrative Assistant/Paralegal I
Reports to: Paralegal Team

A Legal Assistant/Paralegal I is recognized as undergoing a period of training and development in practice area skills, professional skills (organization, effective planning, problem solving and analytical skills) and knowledge of Firm operations; works under immediate supervision with duties and tasks directed by a supervising attorney; relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform most functions of the job; uses limited discretion or independent judgment in performing job duties; and performs more routine tasks that involve related steps, processes and methods.

? General Administrative (copying/scanning documents, preparing expense reports, reviewing/editing letters and other correspondence)
? Maintains client database; works with Practice Manager Administrator to ensure client information is current at all times
? Creates initial client and litigation file
? Transcription as needed for attorneys, interviews and meetings
? Mails packets to clients; follows up to ensure a timely return of information
? Obtains client questionnaire and appropriate authorizations
? Obtains probate documents from PR should injured party be deceased
? Client contact – answers general, routine questions or referring client appropriately
? Requests records from health care providers, hospitals, Social Security Administration, Workers Compensation, financial institutions, etc.
? Responsible for payment of invoices associated with requests for medical records, financial records, SS records, etc.
? Completes and submits claim forms and all required information regarding administrative and bankrupt claims
? Organizes client medical notebook
? Prepares affidavits for PID, work history and co-workers as directed by attorney
? Schedules and notices depositions along with court reporter and videographer
? Assists more senior paralegals with preparing trial notebooks and packing for trial
? Arrangements for A/V equipment to be used at trial (projectors, blow-ups, etc.)
? Assists with scheduling witnesses for trial
? Indexes depositions
? Prepares simple pleadings; serves pleadings as directed
? Maintains contact with co-counsel
? Examines statutes, articles, constitutions, codes, etc. for the preparation of documents ? Files pleadings with court clerk as needed

o Bachelor’s Degree: 0-1 year of legal experience;
o Associate’s Degree/ABA Accredited Paralegal Certificate: 1-5 years legal experience,
o In the absence of a degree: 3-5 years of legal experience
? Knowledge and understanding of the Rules for Professional Conduct (Rule 407, SCACR) and the
South Carolina Rules of Court for both state and federal courts
? Interpersonal skills necessary to interface with partners, associates, co-counsel, support staff,
medical personnel, and others outside the Firm. Able to communicate effectively orally and in
? Experience in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment preferred; operates well under pressure.
? A working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Ability to learn other software
and/or database management systems as necessary.
? Good judgment and discretion necessary to maintain confidentiality of information
shared/gained/received while in the employ of client company
? Able to take direction and organize and prioritize work assignments.
? Must be able to work independently and pay close attention to details.
? Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs. and work on the floor, organizing documents.
? Ability to work overtime as needed in order to meet deadlines.
