There are many reasons that job hunters should leverage a human capital management (i.e. staffing) firm as part of their job search strategy.

These firms employ millions of people.  According to the American Staffing Association, 2.8 million people are employed by human capital management companies every day.  These same companies hire 12.9 million temporary and contract employees every year, with 79% of these employees working full-time, the same as the rest of the workforce.

Searching for a job takes a multi-pronged approach.  Only searching job boards or only looking for help from family and close friends is not going to land you the job of your dreams.  You need to incorporate all methods in your search:  job boards and networking and job fairs and cold-calling and researching individual companies and working with staffing firms.

But why work with a human capital management (i.e. staffing) firm?  It is a well-known statistic that only 10% of the jobs out there are ever advertised.  This includes the jobs that these firms have access to.  So, the answer to that question is another question.  Why wouldn’t you pursue a path that helps you access the 90% of non-advertised jobs?

If you still have doubts, let’s look at four other key reasons why you should work with a staffing firm:

  1. Established relationship with employers.  Human capital management firms have solid relationships with many different types of employers.  So instead of you doing all the research and approaching each opportunity on an ad hoc basis, simply work with a firm that has an established network of opportunities and can work with you to find the best-fit for your work style, personality and needs.
  2. Provide a bridge to full-time employment.  You may be looking for a full-time opportunity, but do not rule out temporary assignments.  Over 80% of staffing clients (the companies that contract with these firms) say that their partnership is a good way to find people who can be hired on as employees.  Client companies value a “try-before-you-buy” model.  So why not embrace it too?  A right-fit is always a two way street.  The client company must be happy with your work performance, but you must also be happy with their culture and work environment in order for the job to be a true “right fit”.
  3. Career advice.  The job market is tough right now. Companies can afford to be picky, and a misstep (any misstep) during the hiring process can mean the difference between a start date and starting over.   Human capital management firms can provide job searchers with invaluable career advice.  Snelling’s Job Candidate Resource Hub is filled with advice on resume creation and design, interview strategies and tips, salary negotiation, leveraging job references and making the best first impression possible.
  4. It’s free.  Job candidates never pay a fee for career services from a reputable staffing firm.
